Throughout September, we are showcasing our beautiful Piatnik playing cards while teaching you how to play a new card game. We celebrated Digital Detox Day on the 5th September, and playing card games are a great way to turn off your digital devices and play some card games with your friends.
You can read our blog about other ways to have a digital detox here.
This week, learn how to play Speed.
This is an exciting, fast-paced game for 2 players. The aim of the game is to use all your cards up first.
How to Play: Speed
How Many Players
2
Equipment
1 standard pack of cards, jokers removed.
Aim
Get rid of all the cards in your hand and personal deck.
Set Up
Shuffle the cards. Set two cards in the middle of a table face down, then make two piles of five cards to either side of these cards, also facing down.
Deal out the remaining cards to each player as a personal deck. Both players should receive 20 cards. Each player then draws 5 cards from their personal deck to form a hand, which they can look at.
How To Play
To begin the game, each player reaches to the centre cards on the table and turns it face up. The players then start placing cards simultaneously.
Cards played must be one number higher than the one played previously. The values go from ace, two, three, all the way up to king. Ace then can be played on top of kings, and the values repeat.
If neither player can place a card, they simultaneously flip a card from the piles at the side. If both players still can’t move, this is repeated until players can play.
After a card has been placed on the pile, players pick up another card from their personal deck, so that they always have 5 cards in their hand.
If players run out of new cards to draw from the side piles, the cards in the middle are turned upside down and can be used.
The first person to use all the cards in their hand and personal deck is the winner.
And that’s how you play Speed. Have fun! If you enjoy playing, don’t forget to tag us on social with #GibsonsCardGames.
For this game we used our fantastic Frida Kahlo playing cards.
