Digital Detox Day 2021: How Can Games Help?

Digital Detox Day 2021: How Can Games Help?
Posted on

Are you sick of your family and friends being engrossed in their digital devices? Perhaps you’ve even become sick of the endless scrolling and glare of a screen. Maybe it’s time for a detox!

What is Digital Detox Day and why?

On the 5th of September, Gibsons will be taking part in Digital Detox Day, a campaign that encourages both adults and kids to switch off from all electronic devices. And yes, that means 24 hours away from phones, tablets, TVs, laptops and games consoles. Celebrities such as Zoella, Rizzle Kicks and Little Mix have all supported this campaign in the past, which aims to make people aware of the effects excessive screen time can have on your mental health.

There are many benefits of digital detox that can be applied to both kids and adults, such as reducing stress levels and promoting a healthier lifestyle. If you’ve noticed that you, your family or friends are all too attached to your screens, then a digital detox could help.

But, this doesn’t mean going full cold turkey! Just unplugging from technology for a short break every day can be enough to help your kids develop healthier habits. That’s why Digital Detox Day just lasts for 24 hours!

If you’re struggling to think of ways to spend the day without technology, then don’t worry! We’re here to help. Board games are a great way to spend some quality time together with your friends and family, without the use of a screen.

In the guide below, we’ll explain exactly how board games can help with your digital detox day, as well as some top picks for you to play on the day. Let’s dive in!

How can board games help when taking part in Digital Detox Day?

There’s no denying that our world is dominated by digital devices.  Almost everything that we do these days revolves around the use of technology, social media and the internet.

Of course, there are plenty of advantages to technology, but there are also a few downsides. We’ve all been known to have excessive screen times and a little too much reliance on these digital devices. Not to mention the effect it can have on your mental health!

Research conducted by The Royal Society Of Public Health found social media to be more addictive than smoking and alcohol,  and that using it for more than two hours per day is associated with poor self-rating of mental health, increased levels of psychological distress and suicidal ideation. Plus it reported that 4 of the 5 most popular platforms increased anxiety in young people.

Board games, on the other hand, offer up a host of mental health benefits such as:

  • They can lower stress levels,
  • Boost enthusiasm
  • Boost brain power
  • Protect against dementia!

Board games also promote connections with other people, as usually they are played by at least two players. Unlike watching the TV, or scrolling on your phone, a board game is a very social activity that doesn’t rely on a screen for fun.

During digital detox day, play a board game together with some friends or family, and you’ll soon see the benefits! Stuck for ideas on which one you should  play? Why not try one of the following board games below?
