The Queen’s Gambit has recently taken Netflix by storm, with a story of orphan Beth Harmon becoming prolific at chess and (spoilers) eventually dominating both on the national and international level. Over 62 million households have chosen to watch The Queen’s Gambit in its first 28 days, and the show has risen to the top 10 Netflix shows in 92 countries, taking the number 1 spot in 63 of them.
It’s not just in Harmon’s fictional reality either. Chess has gained a huge momentum since the Netflix series was released. Google search queries for chess have doubled, while searches for “how to play chess” has hit a nine-year peak online. Here at Gibsons we’ve had a rush of enquiries about our own chess sets, and the chess aficionados in the company are eager to start our own chess group.

Chess and Draughts Family Game
This Chess and Draughts Set has everything you need to play these two classic games of skill. This is an ideal starter set of chess and draughts, with a combination set of wooden chess pieces, King 2.5”, felted bases, and wooden draughtsmen, together with a good quality games board which measures 36cm x 36cm.

Chess Set 3” and 3 1/2” King
While the above sets in this blog have been a combination of both chess and draughts, we also have two sets that are exclusively for chess.
Both of these sets contains 3” or 3 ½“ carved 'Staunton' style chess pieces made of Karri wood and Boxwood, each with weighted and felted bases and presented in cloth drawstring pouches. The boards each have 40mm squares and are inlaid with walnut and maple.
On the 3” version, the board measures 34.5cm x 34.5cm x 1cm. This gorgeous set costs £80.
