International Women’s Day – Celebrating with Katie Abey

International Women’s Day – Celebrating with Katie Abey
Posted on

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we want to shine the light on our new female designers and artists to discover what inspires, drives and motivates them in their work. In the lead up to International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we are sharing mini-interviews with our artists and designers which we hope will empower our followers to champion women and take action for equality.

Today's interview is with illustrator Katie Abey who is based in Derbyshire and has just released her first Gibsons puzzle, Punimals.

Her bright and colourful work provides illustrative doses of happiness and motivation along with a little dash of sarcasm. She is a big lover of animals and her work often features creatures looking slightly nonchalant, perturbed or even a bit deranged! She likes using a lot of colour in her work and this love of colour is reflected in her brightly coloured studio space and her hair, which frequently changes colour to match its surroundings.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be an artist. I used to draw all the time from an early age. I used to be sure to include people's belly buttons in my earliest work, which worries me slightly as I now have a huge belly button phobia.

Q: Why illustration?

A: Without art the world would certainly be a boring place.

Q: What motivates you to work for yourself?

A: I love each day being different and I am so grateful for the flexibility.

Q: Biggest achievement?

A: My biggest life achievement is my 7 month old daughter Violet who is amazingly weird already.

My biggest work achievement is every single time someone messages me to say that my art helped them in some way. There is no other feeling like it.

Q: Who is a woman you admire and why?

A: A woman I hugely admire is Shirley Hughes who is still illustrating at age 92, goals.
