This year we have released 11 new jigsaw puzzles in our White Logo Collection, our range of design-led jigsaw puzzles especially for adults who are looking for more contemporary designs rather than traditional puzzle scenes.
To celebrate, we’ve been talking to some our fantastic artists who designed the gorgeous illustrations. Today we are talking to the talented Kitty Bardsley, the artist behind our brand-new Purrfect Plants jigsaw.
What made you want to become an artist?
I'm not sure there was ever a moment when I actively thought that I'd like to be an artist, it was more instinctive and felt like a natural progression from being a creative child. As a child I would always be creating little creative projects for myself from creating cards and magazine type booklets for my family to painting designs on my shoes and bedroom walls (my parents kindly gave me permission for this!). So the creativity progressed from there I think. I'm super grateful that I have been able to turn my favourite hobby into my job as well.
How does it feel to have your artwork turned into a jigsaw puzzle? Are you a jigsaw fan yourself?
It is such an honour to have my artwork turned into a jigsaw puzzle! It's great
that this design can be something more than just a print. I love jigsaws too,
the process can be very therapeutic!
What inspires your designs?
Some big inspirations for me include vintage art, mythology, nature, animals and colour.
How many house plants do you have at home? Do you have a favourite?
I have four house plants: two monsteras, a rubber plant and a snake plant. I am
most attached to my rubber plant as I have had it for years; it started growing
more leaves last summer for the first time too which was exciting!
Can you briefly talk us through your creative process? How do you turn your ideas into the beautiful illustrations you produce?
I usually start with an initial idea in my mind of what I want to draw and how it could look. I will then do some image research on my subject for reference and
play around with colour palettes. I'll start sketching out some compositions and if I feel it needs more work I'll keep sketching or if I'm quite confident of the direction the design is going in I'll start drawing out my ideas digitally and refining as I go.
What would you have on your perfect pizza topping?
I love a pepperoni pizza! There is a pizzeria down the road from where I live and my order is always the same: a garlic base, cheese stuff crust and pepperoni. It never disappoints!
And finally, what are you working on next? Do you have any exciting projects coming up?
I am currently working on a new set of illustrations to come out in the spring
but am also days away from giving birth to my daughter so I reckon she will
keep me busy for a while!
