To celebrate International Women’s Day, we want to shine the light on our female artists to discover what inspires, drives and motivates them in their work. In the lead up to International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we are sharing mini-interviews with our artists and designers which we hope will empower our followers to champion women and take action for equality.

Today's interview is with illustrator Pimlada Phuapradit who has designed our best-selling jigsaw puzzle advent calendars.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: My name is Pimlada Phuapradit. I am an illustrator and designer based in Thailand. I studied textile design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and was working as a knitwear designer in Bangkok before pursuing further education in illustration. I received an MFA (Illustration as Visual Essay) from the School of Visual Arts. I am now working as an illustrator and designer, specializing in surface pattern designs and greeting cards. My work process is a combination of hand-drawn and digital coloring.

I worked on the Christmas is coming Advent Jigsaw Puzzle Calendar and Famous Felines Jigsaw Puzzle with Gibsons.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I wanted to be a veterinarian.

Q: Why did you choose to become an illustrator?

A: Ive enjoyed drawing since I was a little kid. Each step of illustration is a challenging and fun experiment in itself. There are always new elements to explore.

Q: What motivates you to work for yourself and be an entrepreneur?

A: Working for myself allows me to have a flexible schedule. I can work continuously on something without having to stop at the end of regular business hours. Being able to maintain the stage of flow is essential to my creative process.

Q: What’s your biggest achievement?

A: My biggest achievement is seeing illustration and design projects that I worked on published in books and various types of products.

Q: Who is a woman you admire and why?

A: I admire Frida Kahlo. Despite her medical circumstances, which were worsened by a bus accident, she did not stop painting. I admire her courage to fight against severe physical pain to create paintings that depict both beauty and agony. They are reflections of her story.
