International Women’s Day – Celebrating with Lisa Alderson

International Women’s Day – Celebrating with Lisa Alderson
Posted on

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we want to shine the light on our female artists to discover what inspires, drives and motivates them in their work. In the lead up to International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we are sharing mini-interviews with our artists and designers which we hope will empower our followers to champion women and take action for equality.

Today's interview is with illustrator Lisa Alderson who joined our team a few years ago and has since illustrated several images for our Christmas collections.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: I'm Lisa Alderson, I live in a village near York with my husband, our twins and Hobbes the dog (who occasionally pops up in my work!). I'm an illustrator who loves painting anything! But especially animals and wildlife, which is reflected in my recent work for Gibsons.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: 100% an illustrator, I've drawn for as long as I can remember.

Q: Why did you choose to become an illustrator?

A: It's all I've ever wanted to be and I've been very, very lucky to be living my dream with the help of my agents at Advocate Art and the support of my husband.

Q: What motivates you to work for yourself and be an entrepreneur?

A: To work for myself offers me a greater diversity in my career, with each day holding the potential to be a very different day to the last.

Q: What’s your biggest achievement?

A: My biggest work achievement would have to be fulfilling the dream I had as a little girl to be an illustrator and to still be doing that for over 20 years.

Q: Who is a woman you admire and why?

A: I would have to choose three women that I admire and they would be Cicely Mary Barker, Beatrix Potter and Jill Barklem. All wonderful illustrators of books that I grew up reading, and whose work I would copy as a child. They were the female role models I needed to believe a career in art was possible.
